Cyclist Injured in Hit & Run Accident in North Hollywood

ajabluMay is bike month in Los Angeles.  It’s a good time to remember that cyclist share the road with motorized vehicles and for the most part, share the same traffic laws as automobiles.

In Mission Hills, a cyclist was struck and injured seriously by a hit-and-run driver on a Sunday morning.

The 53-year-old North Hollywood man was riding westbound on Devonshire Street when a car slowed in the intersection for a red light and then sped up, running the light and hitting the cyclist.  The vehicle, described by witnesses as a possible white Jaguar, hit the cyclist while traveling north on Sepulveda Boulevard.

The car definitely knew he hit the rider because once hit, the cyclist rolled onto the hood of the car and smashed the windshield.  The car slammed on its brakes upon impact throwing the cyclist to the ground.

The cyclist, wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, suffered broken bones as a result of the accident but did not suffer any life threatening injury.

In 2012, it is estimated that 726 bicyclists were killed in crashes with motor vehicles.    That breaks down to about two people per day.  This is an increase of about 45 more people killed in cycling accidents than reported in 2011.

The amount of cyclists injured in by motor vehicles in 2012 jumped by 1000.  There were 49,000 reported injuries involving bikes and cars in 2012.  To be safe, it is important that both cars and cyclist obey the traffic laws and just like drivers need to wear seatbelts, cyclist need to wear helmets.  Although helmets cannot prevent an accident from happening, they can be a last line of defense against head injuries if involved in a collision.
