Father Arrested for Murder in Crash that Killed Children

download (23)The father of two children that were killed in an accident on the Fourth of July off Highway 39 in Azusa has been arrested on two counts of murder.

Authorities with the Azusa Police Department say that the charges were filed against Arcadio Varela Caliz, 31, at the Azusa Police Department. His bail has been set at $2 million.

The accident took the lives of Andrea Caliz Martinez, 12, and Christopher Caliz Martinez, 8. The two children were thrown from the SUV driven by their father after it went over an embankment on July 4th. The family, according to a cousin, had been celebrating Andrea Caliz’ 12th Birthday.

Surviving the crash was Arcadio Varela Caliz, his wife, Marbella Martinez,32, and their 13-year-old daughter, Marista. Mirabella Martinez and Marista were found injured outside the vehicle at the scene of the accident.

A preliminary investigation has indicated evidence that the vehicle may have been speeding prior to the crash and that none of the occupants of the vehicle were wearing a seat belt at the time of the fatal accident.
