Home Invasion Chase Leads to Shooting

download (53)A second officer-involved shooting this year on the same stretch of the 215 freeway happened this week. The incident resulted in one person being shot by a San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy from a sheriff’s helicopter.

Deputy Olivia Bozek said that a suspect in a home invasion robbery that happened in Fontana on Thursday resulted in a high speed chase with speeds that reached around 100 mph.

Deputies attempted to pull over the suspect who was driving a gold Chevy Tahoe at approximately 1:00 p.m. on Friday. The suspect then led deputies on the chase which began in Fontana and through San Bernardino and then on to the 215 freeway.

When the chase reached its highest speeds and was driving the wrong way on the freeway, one of the two deputies that were in the sheriff’s helicopter opened fire on the suspect. During the chase, the suspect jumped out of his vehicle near Little League Drive, ran a short distance and then collapsed.

The bullet riddled Tahoe was still running and continued to roll until it crashed into a blue Dodge Durango carrying three people.

Investigators are currently trying to determine whether the suspect died as the result of gunshot wounds or from other injuries. The suspect, whose name has not yet been released by authorities, died at the scene of the incident.

The occupants of the Durango that was involved in the crash were taken to area hospitals and treated for their injuries. Their current status and identities have not been released.

The North Verdemont Elementary School, which is part of the San Bernardino City Unified School District was placed on lock down as a precaution. Schools in the area were shut down at 12:45 p.m. but were reopened at approximately 1:45 p.m.
