Multiple Fatalities in Laguna Beach Crash

An elderly Laguna Woods man has died as a result of injuries suffered in a two-vehicle crash on Monday.  The crash also took the life of a mother and injured her two children.

download (79)According to Laguna Beach police, the crash happened at El Toro and Laguna Canyon roads at approximately 12:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

The woman has been identified by the Orange County coroner’s office as Sandra Maldonado, 31, of Mission Viejo.  Maldonado was riding in a vehicle with her children, ages 5 and 8, that was heading northbound on El Toro Road when her vehicle collided with a Honda Pilot traveling southbound, both vehicles sideswiping each other.

Maldonado’s car spun around and the Honda rolled off the road into some bushes, where it came to rest.

Maldonado was transported to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Orange, where she died from her injuries.

The other driver, Manuel Mercado, 86, who was hospitalized in grave condition, was pronounced dead at 5:42 p.m. Sunday.  Mercado’s wife who was also in the vehicle was unhurt in the accident.

Maldonado’s children were transported to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana and did not appear to be seriously injured.

Investigators say that alcohol does not appear to be a factor.  However the accident is still under investigation.
