Pedestrian En Route to Hospital Killed in Hit and Run

A woman who was walking to a hospital in Lakewood was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver. According to investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the accident happened at approximately 9:56 p.m. Tuesday in the 3700 block of South Street in Lakewood. Teresa Hernandez, 67, of Downey, and her adult daughter were talking across South Street towards Lakewood Regional Hospital when she was hit by the suspect’s vehicle.

Investigators say that the two women were not in the crosswalk at the time of the accident. Hernandez was declared dead at the scene. Her daughter was not injured.

Authorities are now looking for the suspect’s vehicle and describe it as a compact black Nissan or Honda which likely has extensive front-end damage after hitting Herandez.

Area business owners indicate that people are constantly jaywalking across the stretch of roadway near the hospital. One person whose family owns a nearby pharmacy said that members of the community have been trying for years to convince the city that a crosswalk is needed in order to keep pedestrians safe. So far, they have not been successful in convincing officials of the need.
