Speed Kills on San Fernando Road

Reckless drivers are the cause of thousands of tragedies in the United States every day. Sadly, they are not only dangerous to themselves, but to everyone around them. Speeding was the likely cause of a crash that killed two people in Sylmar, males aged 18 and 19, on San Fernando Road close to the 5 Freeway underpass, around 7:30 in the evening. A third young man, 18 years old, was driving but only sustained minor injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital. All three of the men were members of the College of the Canyons football team.

Authorities say the black 2005 Nissan 300Z that the men were in was going south on San Fernando Road when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it turned into the lanes going the opposite direction, hitting a silver van.

The 44-year-old driver of the van and an 11-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital.

Witnesses told reports they believed the accident was caused by young people engaging in a street race. Officials did not believe that to be the case, but they are fairly certain excessive speed contributed to the crash.
