Huge Raid in LA Fashion District

Federal and local law enforcement officers converged on the Los Angeles fashion district Wednesday. The raid resulted in the arrest of nine suspects and millions of dollars that authorities believe were being laundered for drug dealers and kidnappers connected to the Mexican drug cartels.

Approximately 1,000 officials served dozens of search and arrest warrants connected to fashion district businesses.

According to U.S. Department of Justice spokesman Thom Mrozek, during the raid, nine people were arrested with five additional suspects being sought. In addition to the arrests, $65 million dollars was seized. In one of the cases, three business partners are accused of laundering $140,000 in ransom money that had been paid by the family of a U.S. citizen who had been held captive and tortured by the Sinaloa drug cartel.

Los Angeles has become increasingly connected to money from narco-related trafficking. Because of this, U.S. Attorney Robert Dugdale, who heads the Criminal Division of the DOJ’s Central District of California, says that law enforcement departments in the greater Los Angeles area are now on the front lines of combatting the issue in this country.
