Man Arrested in Hit and Run of 101-year-old Man

A 101-year-old man has been struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in Boyle Heights. Eyewitnesses were able to find the driver and hold him until police arrived on the scene. Authorities say that Jose Noriega, 101, was in a marked crosswalk crossing Lorena Street at the Opal intersection when he was struck by a 1997 Chevy Astro minivan at approximately was in a marked crosswalk when he was struck by the driver of a 1997 Chevy Astro van around 6:00 a.m.

Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Traffic Division spokesperson, Detective Felix Padilla indicated that the driver, Ricardo Avalos, 41, of Los Angeles, fled the scene of the accident, but witnesses to the accident found and blocked him a short distance away.

Noriega was transported to County-USC Medical Center, where doctors pronounced him dead at approximately 8:00 a.m.

Avalos was arrested and booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, Padilla said. Bail has been set at $50, 000.

Investigators say that they are hoping additional witnesses to the incident will come forward.
